About Mahjong

Mahjong is a tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty. The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols, though many regional variations exist. Mahjong Solitaire, the single-player version popularized in the West, is a matching game where players remove pairs of identical tiles from a board.

History

The traditional game of Mahjong was developed in the mid-19th century and quickly spread throughout China and later to other parts of the world. Mahjong Solitaire, also known as Shanghai Solitaire, was created in 1981 by Brodie Lockard and became one of the most popular computer games of the 1980s and 1990s.

How to Play

In Mahjong Solitaire, tiles are arranged in various patterns. The goal is to remove all tiles by matching pairs of identical tiles. Only tiles that are "free" (not blocked on the left or right side) can be selected. The game requires strategy and careful planning, as removing the wrong tiles can block access to other tiles needed to complete the game.

Tile Types

Traditional Mahjong tiles include three suits (Bamboo, Characters, and Circles), honor tiles (Winds and Dragons), and bonus tiles (Flowers and Seasons). In Mahjong Solitaire, matching pairs of any identical tiles will remove them from the board, making the game accessible to players of all skill levels.

Strategy Tips

  • Look for tiles that are blocking multiple other tiles and prioritize removing them
  • Try to create multiple matching options rather than focusing on a single pair
  • Pay attention to the layers - sometimes you need to remove upper tiles to access lower ones
  • Use hints and other boosters strategically when you're stuck
  • Plan ahead - think about which tiles you'll need to access later in the game
