1. Play slowly and carefully. Fortress Mahjong is a game of strategy, and you must play carefully to avoid getting stuck in the middle of the game. 
2. Don’t make any pair straight away.If you see a pair you can make, it doesn’t mean playing is the right move—check if that move reveals any more moves you can make on your next go. 
3. Eliminate the top layers first. One of the main reasons people get stuck is because they don’t take it one layer at a time. 
4. Make shuffling a last resort. You can typically shuffle a few times in Fortress Mahjong, but leave this as a last resort.
